review 1: This is a wonderful book by Alex Miller, about differences between city and country, the ties of friendship and the ability of love to endure. The story is told by Bobby Blue, who is a bushman of the old school, even though he is only 20. Bobby is on his own and takes a job working as an assistant to the new constable, Daniel Collins. Collins is new to the town and doesn't sit back and let things sort themselves out, as the previous police constable had. This leads to conflict, and Bobby is forced to choose between friendship and following the rules. Miller writes about the bush and the people who live there with a true voice. It is a delight to read.
review 2: This one has stayed with me through two subsequent and unrelated novels. Don't be fooled by the
... moreBrokeback Mountain-esque cover - this is a gritty Australian novel full of gritty Australian characters told in a ...you know I want to use "gritty" again, but this voice is simply... real and true, and totally believable. I must constantly remind myself that Bobby Blue isn't a real person. I love his patience and humility, his loyalty, his devotion to his mother, his almost spiritual connectedness to his 'country' and his respect for those who truly were. Bobby tantalises us (not deliberately!) as he carefully reconstructs the event at Coal Creek and everything that led to it. Though he obviously lacks a thorough education in formal language, this never detracts from his ability to beautifully communicate everything on his mind. He deliberates carefully over the recount and you are utterly compelled to stay with him through the whole ordeal. If you have the patience for a heartbreaking story, beautifully told, I thoroughly recommend this book to you! less

The best bit for me was the insight of the main character who was a man of very few words.
