Precious Ramotswe's Very First Cases
review 1: I highly recommend this 73 page chapter book for elementary students. It is a prequel to The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, an adult mystery series. Like the original books, this book is set in Botswana and the main character is Precious Ramotswe. The mystery is simple but appropriate for young readers. Yummy treats are disappearing from the school. Precious uses her powers of observation, thoughtfulness, and ingenuity to solve the problem.I think it would be fun to read this series of books as a class. They could watch how Precious develops as a detective but also learn about Africa and specifically about Botswana. Included at the back of this book is a letter from the author, a character guide, facts about the geography and people of Botswana, a reader's guide, an... mored suggested curriculum connections. There is lots of great information for an inquisitive reader or for a teacher to use to build a unit of study.
review 2: Another wonderful offering from Alexander McCall Smith. This is the story of Mma Rotwokstwe as a young girl growing up with her wise father. Even then, mystery enters her life as someone is stealing the children's school lunches. When one child is accused, Precious sets out to prove their accusations false. Already showing her innate sense knowing who is telling the truth and looking beyond to find the real truth. I wonder if the author will be following this with more books for children. less

A fun, pleasant read about respecting one another from the child's point of view.

Cute children's mystery book, but better suited to younger than 5th grade.
