Precious Ramotswe's Very First Cases

review 1: The second book in the mystery series about a young Precious Ramotswe. In this book, Precious and her friends have to track down a missing cow. I love how the setting contributes to the mystery (these are not mysteries that could take place here in America, for example). I also appreciate the way these books empathize important virtues like honesty, friendship, and hard work, but in a way that is not didactic. As in the first volume, there is a Reader's Guide at the end.
review 2: This is the second book I have read in the series about Precious, a child living in Botswana, Africa. Alexander McCall Smith, for those who not familiar with his books, does a wonderful job of character development. He makes the reader feel that they personally know the people that ... moreare portrayed in the books. This series is great for children in grades 2-4 and teaches them about other cultures with ideals that are not so different that the ones everyone practices and have. We are using this book in our Battle of the Books program this summer. I can't wait to see how much the children are going to like this book. less
