review 1: I've read that the demographic for these books is middle-aged women. OK, I may not agree, but that describes me, so guilty as charged. I don't think you have to be a middle-aged woman to appreciate the kindness, the tenderness of this series and, specifically, of this book. I look forward to each one with joy, and put it down with love for the characters and appreciation for the seemingly effortless craft that the writer employs. McCall Smith calls out the best in us. That's no mean achievement.
review 2: I have enjoyed this whole series of books (and I have read all of them so far). They are not so much about the cases as they are about the characters. And this book, more than the others in the series is about the people. I listened to the audio book a... morend loved the reader. I think she especially voiced Mma Makutsi well. And this story is very much about her and her new baby. I love the gentle pace and the reflection on people and how they should act that the author infuses in these books. less
