review 1: Such a hidden gem! I say hidden because I almost didn't download this book. The cover is awful. It looks like two kids from a YA novel, the blurb is incorrect and misleading. BUT, it came up on my Goodreads recommendations so I gave it a shot.I'm so glad I did! It's a beautiful, gut wrenching, inspiring, painful story about Anderson. A twelve year old boy thrown into a shuttle, meant for 30, by his older sister when their mining colony is hit and destroyed by asteroids. He watches from the shuttle window while his entire planet, family, and everything he knows is destroyed. Anderson spends the next TEN YEARS in hyperspace, alone. I'm not going to give away any more of the story. That would be cheating. I will say the author did an amazing job of bringing us along inside ... moreAnderson's head. This is science fiction, there is space travel, different planets, other species and technology. It's also a psychological study. Imagine yourself alone in space with only you to talk to. Then, after that, when you finally land at a space station, would you be sane? It's also a love story. Love in all it's family, friends and lovers facets. Love is beautiful, often painful and sometimes gory but always worth it.There are some sizzling sexy scenes, spouse abuse and non consensual sex while Anderson fights to stay sane, figure out who he is and what is real. Settle in, get comfy and enjoy.
review 2: Holy hell. The plot of this story is incredible. I absolutely devoured the book through the time Anderson was alone on the shuttle. The psychology of it captivated me.Then the shuttle landed, and the story started to drag. The whole thing with CJ felt too much like instalove and I didn't buy it, and the plot seemed to hop around without anything much actually happening. It wasn't bad, it was just slow, and a bit disappointing after such a stunning first half. less
