review 1: This book surprised me very much because of its beautiful way of conveying a dark and challenging subject. At first glance, it appears to be a longer chapter book, but upon opening the pages, it is clear that it is filled with poetry and pictures, which makes it accessible to children who are making the transition from early readers to chapter books. The poetry might be challenging for some younger readers to decipher, but I thought it was wonderfully mysterious at times and makes the reader really get into the head of Amira, the speaker.
review 2: I read the ARC of this book and am anxious to see the final illustrations. That being said, the verse writing of Amira's story totally captivated me. War comes to Amira's South Darfur village and families flee to a
... more refugee camp in Kalma. Verses seem to be perfect for imagining Amira's life and desires. She wants to leave the refugee camp and go to school--to learn to read and write. Yes, I did desire more on the Darfur conflict and struggles of the Sudanese people, but the story is rich with historical detail. I felt it was good that my eyes were opened and my mind wanting more... An important story to share with middle grades students and above. less
