review 1: I adored this book! Andrew Smith has surprised me yet again, because I wasn't quite sure that I was going to be a fan, but like with Grasshopper Jungle, I couldn't stop! I might be an Andrew Smith junkie. Smith's writing and characters are incredibly smart, real, and witty. I laughed out loud several times and felt a little sad when the book ended. Smith can keep writing and I'll keep reading.
review 2: I'm giving this 3 stars because Andrew Smith is a very creative writer. To wrap this story around the story in Finn Easton's father's novel, the unique scar on Finn's back, and to also work in lots of random scientific (but entertaining) facts, shows his writing skills. ... moreropriate in class. One of the problems I had with the book was the lack of a plot. It wasn't until the last 40 pages that something happened that made me want to keep reading. Sometimes the repetitive devices worked for the novel, but other times they became annoying. (I wanted to say "OK, I GET it!") The raw language in the book was a real turn-off for me, especially the constant use of the term "boner" and "f**k". less
