review 1: What a pleasant surprise. I had trouble getting into it at first, but I picked it up again last week and couldn't put it down. A coming of age tale with very serious themes, this thing was nicely written. In fact, it was more designed than written, and I like that a lot. I really have no complaints except for the fact that, for a 'road trip' story, the road in question isn't very long—only about halfway through the state of New Mexico, and then a little jaunt into Arizona. But, hey, it's a minor detail. There is some gore, but it's not gratuitous. It's a nice look into the stout hearts of young men.
review 2: This really should have been a great book. I mean, the plot sounded great, the relationship dynamics sounded great, and the writing was pretty damn goo
... mored. But the characters were ultimately unlikable, and the plot fizzled out right around page 50. This is another case of a novel with all the potential in the world, and very little in the realm of delivery. It's also another case of, I wanted to love this, but ultimately, I really didn't. less
