The Marbury Lens
review 1: Like Grasshopper Jungle, I was drawn in by genre-bending premise of Marbury Lens, but ended up feeling really frustrated and disappointed with the execution. The weird mix of ingredients - this book is part psychological thriller, part ghost story, part parallel universe fantasy - just did not work together in this case. And very unlike Grasshopper, there's also a dire lack of humor or charm to the characters. The story is very grim, repetitive and alienating in its lack of clarity. No real sense of conclusion either and I don't have the patience to struggle through the sequel.
review 2: A fast-paced and engaging page-turner, this is a coming-of-age book, an action/adventure book, and a sci-fi/fantasy book that deals with issues such as drug addiction and post-
... moretraumatic stress disorder, and essential adolescent questions such as, Who Am I Really?, Where Is My Place In The World? and To Whom Do I Owe Loyalty?...all in a unique and imaginative way. This book would be especially good to interest young males in reading(although it holds interest for females as well, and it might be too intense for younger teens). less
