review 1: A little change of pace between the several rings and rays which arrived while I was on holiday. I hadn't read an Anne Mallory for quite a while and I was reminded how much I appreciate her prose.I had to put this down while I was away - didn't want to take a book along on a trip with only a few chapters left to read. Otherwise I would have read this much more swiftly.Mallory's characters here are a bit unusual - at least the heroine is. A shopkeeper with basically no ambition and totally content to socialize with the lower orders...At times the secrets of seduction imparted were exceedingly obscure, but this did not obscure my enjoyment of the book, so to speak.

... morelot to really get going, mostly because it's all bantering dialogue and character study until that point. I appreciate some of the insights into character and motivation that Mallory had, and her not hitting you over the head with it. And yes, i appreciated the woo-ha too. Will be reading more of her novels. less

Deep, seductive, passionate. Good. Not as much from the hero's POV as I usually like.
