review 1: This book is probably of interest only to the hardcore international mystery fan, but I liked it a lot. I have a fondness for all Icelandic detective fiction; most of it is cynical, matter of fact, slightly bleak, and complicated of character. Black Skies is no exception, centering a detective who is a minor character in most of the books in the series. This book leads me to understand and have more sympathy for his harsh attitudes and sometimes crude behavior.
review 2: While not as cold as the weather is in most Scandinavian novels, the rest of the book is pretty bleak, uh, black. The characters are either cranky, angry, or very dirty. The apartments they live in are messy to the point of slovenliness. (Maybe that's why they are so cranky.) And the sto
... morery lines are not very compelling. I didn't really care, and finished it under a black cloud, if not a black sky. less
