review 1: 'Please Ignore Vera Dietz' is an emotional, sometimes disturbing story about tragedy, adolesence, and unconventional love. A main theme in the book is the idea of destiny. Throughout her life the main character, Vera tries to avoid her destiny, in order to not turn out like her parents. The book has similar comedic elements to 'The Fault in our stars' complete with flow charts and a boat load of witty sarcasm. High school senior, Vera isn't coping very well with the death of her best friend Charlie Kahn. She misses him to the point of hallucination, but at the same time resents and hates him for how he hurt her. The story is told mostly in flashbacks with chapter titles, like 'history-age 14' Something very unique about this book is the way the author (A.S. King) ... morechooses to toy with persepective. Events are told through the perspective of inanimate objects, and from Charlie, titled 'a word from the dead kid' I think that the the author did a great job developing Vera's personality and getting into difficult topics like domestic violence, alcoholism and death. I gave this book three stars, because although I thought that the book was well written, at times I felt confused about what was happening. Charlie also bothered me, because of the fact that he never seemed to have much integrity. That made it hard to sympathize with him. Overall, I would recommend 'Please Ignore Vera Deitz to anyone who enjoys dark humor, slightly depressing love stories, and a creativley written book.
review 2: After reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell I am on a YA bender. This was recommended as a similar book, and while I don't think it had too many similarities, I still loved it. It absolutely blew me away. It is written in a really interesting way, from the (awesome, sad, lonely) main character, to the supporting characters and even objects (!) cutting in for a brief word. All of the main characters in this book are suffering greatly in different way, and the way the writer characterizes them is just perfect. Every word is infused with their pain, their feelings. I'm still a little bowled over by the raw emotion of it all. It's not cancer kids FIOS style, it's everyday suffering, the things that many people deal with. And it was so so good. Highly recommend. less
