review 1: The writing style of the author is very lush. I was very easily drawn into the world of the seedy Whitechapel of Honoria and Blade. Character development abounded and I really sympathized for the hero and his heroine. I even look forward to further development of the side characters in the next books of the series! The romance was only an added dash of flavor, not the primary subject matter. A man in charge who faces constant inner turmoil is the age-old benchmark of a good thought-provoking background. Believable motivations all around, and the displaying of humanity in a so-called "devil" was appreciated.
review 2: This was one of those books that was hard to get into. The first few chapters I was completely confused as to what was going on as far as back stor
... morey to the world. So this is set in a alternate steampunk London, Honoria is a lady trying to keep up appearances, feed her orphaned family, and wait...Vampires?? Despite this, I found myself hooked once I got myself farther in and a little more oriented. One of the best things I found about this novel was the author's take on Vampire lore. Supe lore with a steampunk twist. I'm ok with that. The book has great action and a couple of excellent twists and turns. It sets up the villain well, however a lot of the plot devices are a little too convenient.Honoria is a good main character, flawed, yet strong in her ways. Not the biggest fan of this name. Also, some of the sex scenes seem a little too racy for a so-called virgin. Her siblings, as much as she seemed to care about them, didn't seem completely fleshed out. They were more like supporting stand-ins in order to advance her storyline.Blade was...ok as a love interest. His damn accent annoyed the hell out of me. Why was he the only one who had it??? It made anything he said more hilarious than anything, even if it was supposed to be a dramatic moment. 'Ello g'venor! And there is also the fact that even though he supposedly had a heart of gold he was a complete dick to Honoria on no less than three occasions. Fantastic vampire lore, great world building, engaging story with twists and turns, but some issues with the main characters, I'm giving this book 3 stars out of 5. less
