Katerschmaus | Berlin

Off the beaten path, at the edge of the east side gallery and on the bank of River Spree lies Holzmarkt — a creative urban village filled with art, music, and great food. The businesses are a large part of this community’s quirky vibe. They also financially help maintain its ecosystem. As we walked down the meandering tree-lined pathways, we were instantly drawn to the vibrant windows, the peculiar building structures, and the unobstructed views of River Spree.
Katerschmaus replaced the popular dance club, Bar25. When it closed, friends and artists of Bar25 took it upon themselves to develop this unique community. At first, however, we had some trouble finding Katerschmaus, pacing back and forth through the colorful storefronts. We (unsurprisingly) found ourselves devouring a delicious cheesecake from a small cafe, which we later discovered was on the roof of the Katerschmaus.

Temporarily satiated, and with exact directions to our destination translated to us by the a pleasant cafe patron, we made our way down to the riverfront and voilà! Hidden behind the trees, there it was!

The funky-fresh vibe continued from Holzmarkt to the Katerschmaus patio. The gorgeous sunny day begged for us to sit outside.

The ever-changing and inventive menu features a variety of original vegetarian (and non-veg) entrées that are colorful and quirky, inspired perhaps by its surrounding community.
The pointed peppers with quinoa, goat cheese, red onions, and a fruity tomato salsa tasted even better than it looked. The caramelized onions were sweet and juicy. The quinoa and tomato salsa had a surprising heat, and the peppers a distinct crunch. The goat cheese was fresh and creamy. It was the perfect concoction, and was devoured within minutes

Take a break from the bustle of the Berlin nightlife and the enjoy the creative juices at Katerschmaus.
