review 1: Ben Coes writes terrific action books. He is best in class! I put the three I read this summer (The Last Refuge is the 3rd of a series, but you can read it w/o having read the first two) above Lee Childs, Tom Clancy, John Sandford, and my other former favorite Vince Flynn. These three books share a tough, smart, ex-Delta sorta CIA as the main character, and he is mixing it up with Islamic militants. Coes mixes economics (Middle Easterners buying put options on firms they are about to blow up, and hiding the purchase/sale through complex bank deals), with near-death calls and escapes, details about guns and weapons and dams. Just a great author and I can hardly wait for his next.
review 2: Ben Coes is the new champion of thrillers. He has now written four books
... moreand the fifth will be out soon. I just read #3, The Last Refuge. Wow, it gets pretty "hairy" at times. Dewey Andreas is an incredible guy that you don't want to get on his bad side, EVER!! Great story of an Isreali Special Forces Commander abducted in New York by the Iranians and Dewey's commitment to get him freed. In addition he is trying to stop the Iranians from sending a Nuke to Tel Aviv, Israel. The last part of the book is pure Andreas and magical. If you like Brad Thor and the recently deceased Vince Flynn's books you will love Ben Coes' books. I am now reading book #5 "Eye for an Eye" and it's even better!! less
