review 1: Found this book on the shelf in the apartment where my wife and I are staying this week in Atrani on the Amalfi Coast. It was the best of the bunch. The others were unreadable. Power Down is the kind of thriller where there are only about four decent people on the planet, three of whom won't make it unless the hero saves them and the rest of the world from rampant evil. Along the way most of the people who work in government are put in their place, which I don't mind except that none of it feels remotely plausible. The people and the words they speak are symbols representing Coes' worldview, nor is the action plausible as people survive blows to the head with fireplace pokers, gunshot wounds which they repair themselves, etc. Coes must feel it's necessary to go over the to... morep on all accounts in order to meet his audience's need for thrills. I do not.
review 2: This has a storyline similar to novels by both Brad Thor and Vince Flynn. As I'm a fan of their books, I was pretty sure I would like this as well. Dewey Andreas is the typical tragical hero that you can't help but root for and the terrorists are all as evil as you expect villains to be. The momentum builds and the pace quickens as the story draws to its conclusion. I enjoyed it enough to want to read Coes' next one. less
