review 1: I did not care for this book. It was just so unrealistic it made the story seem silly. For this one woman to have an unending supply of money and for her to revamp the town in weeks/months just seemed so far-fetched. Then the fostering that was displayed was ridiculous. They “picked” kids from around the country, choose two outside families, and then flew around the country on a private jet picking them up. They still needed a few more families, so two people literally volunteered and with one sentence of commitment, they were foster parents. There was no paperwork involved, no social workers once they got on the plane, no training for the foster parents (some mention of a background check and a fostering DVD), and no licensing requirements. Literally, within a ... moreweek they all had kids. And then it was basically a happily-ever-after story. Everyone adjusted great, fell in love with one another, respected one another, and only one use of poor judgment was ever involved. Trust everywhere and all thrilled with their arrangements. Even if I weren’t a foster parent, I wouldn’t have liked the book because there really wasn’t much of a plot. The story didn’t offer much conflict except for an old man and his hog, which was also not very believable.
review 2: What would you do with 275 million dollars? That was the question Bernadine Brown had to answer after divorcing her husband of thirty plus years. After asking God to send her a purpose for this money, she purchases the small, historical, black town of Henry Adams, Kansas. Henry Adams was founded by freed slaves in the 1880's and was financially depleted. It's current mayor, Trent July, placed the town on E-bay, hoping for a financial save. Enters Bernadine Brown. Not only does Bernadine want to revitalize the town, but she hopes to place five foster children with families in Henry Adams. Amari the Flash, has been in and out of foster homes since the age of five. This thirteen year old car thief, loves the thrill of driving fast. Eight year old Devon was raised by his grandmother until her death. He is a quiet and compassionate boy and a a deacon at the church. Preston is eleven and overweight. He has been sent from one foster home to another. He knows that those who have taken him in have done so for the money. Seven year old Zoey lived on the streets with her crack addicted mother. When her mother died, Zoey had nowhere to go. She is found by two policemen and handed over to Children Services. Zoey doesn't talk. Jenkins does a wonderful job of weaving the story lines of the children and the revitalization of Henry Adams. The novel is peopled with characters that are real. This is one enjoyable read. less
