review 1: Difficult book for me to rate...I love the writing and descriptions and "story telling" BUT I never got a feeling of cohesiveness tying all the words and pages into a story. It was like I kept reading some form of a very long introduction and waiting for the first chapter. It's hard for me to put into words. There was a lot of prelude but no composition. Anyway, I finished it still awaiting the point of the book; if you read this and keep reading feeling like you are waiting for the plot, you may be hoping in vain for something I never found.
review 2: Pretty much the definition of a 3 star book. The writing was fantastic and engrossing. Cheng really has a way with words and language, and it read easily. Unfortunately the story and characters left much to be
... more desired. They felt wooden, and I didn't really feel invested in Robert (the book defacto main character) until a tiny bit towards the end. Over all an enjoyable read, and i look forward to what Cheng can accomplish in the future. less
