review 1: Ok, so I went into this knowing that the ending was the main cause for so many bad reviews. I think that's why I didn't fully get absorbed as I usually do (especially fast paced books like this one). The premise was good, but I guessed the ending (kinda sorta) right before getting to it. And then the ending was kinda.....blah. Fortunately, I fell in love with the author after reading The Pines and Wayward. I tried reading Run but couldn't take the editorial errors. I am about to try another novel written by Crouch, finger crossed and hoping for the best.
review 2: This was a good story but unfortunately not as good as the previous Crouch novels I have read. It was a kind of ghost story but the big reveal at the end just didn't pack as good of a punch as I was
... more expecting. That aside, it was written quite well. I really felt for the two main characters, Grant and Paige. They were siblings and at a very young age, after having already lost their Mother, were in a horrific car crash that left them essentially without their Father as well. This wasn't a story of perseverance in the face of adversity - these two kids grew up ruined. Grant was a violent alcoholic and Paige abused drugs and became a prostitute. I haven't given away anything here, you'll learn all of this at the beginning with more detail as the story progresses. What would ruin the story is if I told you what was under the bed. That was the main plot. What is there, what it's doing and why. Interesting concept but it lost me a bit in the execution. less
