review 1: The first book was entertaining, the second book began to crumble, this third book fell apart at the creative seams. Crouch gave up on characters. His characters could have progressed and developed throughout the series, but instead they regressed into the stockiest of stock characters. The MC became a lone hero/cowboy saving the town with guts and guns blazing. His 12-year-old son was given the faculties and capabilities of a five year old. The women were empty, useless shells in need of saving. (A dialogue line that summarizes male/female agency within this novel: "I know of a place where we can hide. Wait this out until your dad fixes it." Yes, that's right women, just wait and hide, don't take action, Manly Man Cowboy is going to do the fixin' for you.) The only female... more with any agency was a blood-thirsty psycopath, because of course the only women who would dare act or take their lives into their own hands are crazy man-murderers.As the reader's attention swerved away from the vapid interactions and toward the plot and setting, these too fell apart. While the premise was intriguing in the first book, the details do not hold up under examination. Crouch clearly knows nothing or cared to include nothing rational about food chains, predator/prey relationships or evolution. All that said, I actually liked how he ended the series, and I'm pretty picky about my endings.
review 2: This was an amazing trio of books. Book 3 pick up right where book two left off and the story continued without so much as a ripple. Of the three books the last book seem to read the fastest. I thought I would be ready to be finished with the characters by the end of the third book but I am not. They grow on you in a way that is hard to explain and you continue to think about them and wonder about their lives even when not reading. Now a little something about the ending and no I am not going to spoil it for you. Book 3 ends in what I thought was a very unexpected way and in my own head I believe it cracks the door for perhaps a fourth book someday. All I can say is this , if a fourth book does show up Someday I will be one of the first to get my fingers on it and read it. Can't wait to find out what happens. If you are reading this dear author. Please know that you may have no intention of writing that fourth book and you may never do it but I will always wonder in the back of my mind what comes next............ less
