review 1: This book is just right for tweens or teens seeking to understand the hurtful ways in which girls (and women)interact with one another. Actually, I'm not sure it shouldn't be required reading even for girls who don't think they care about this. It is clear and to the point. Chapters are divided into short passages with compelling subheadings, so it's an easy read. It isn't 100% complete in covering the ways that bullying can happen, but it comes close, and advice on how to deal is practical and sensible. One of the strengths of the book is that it isn't just a book for victims of bullying, but also convincingly shows the ways many girls may inadvertently hurt others, and offers alternative ways to avoid doing so. I only wish that in the suggestions for ways that girls can ... moreteam up to work together rather than tearing each other down, the "feminist" stuff came at the very end. I fear that some readers will turn off at the use of a label and a page of definitions of different types of feminism, which is honestly less interesting than the rest of the book. I'd hate for them to stop reading before the answer to the question of whether it gets better after high school, or the suggestions for actual concrete ways to work together. This is a book I will promote to the SAC, health teachers, and counselors at school as well as the students who come into the library.
review 2: May consider this for my kid when she is at the end of middle school or start of high school. Gives a decent foundation for why girls act mean the way they do, but not a lot of depth. Good online resources in the back for empowerment. I liked that it not only dealt with a girl feeling she may be a victim, but also encouraged self-reflection to examine when the girl might actually be the "mean" one. less
