review 1: 2.5 These books in no way compare to the awesomeness of Sanderson's adult fiction. I'm going to finish the series but I don't think it relates to the rest of his cosmere. I'm rather curious at this point to get to the Hushlands and see how it differs, as well as have a better feel for the mysterious silimatic tech. There are aspects that are interesting but its hard to feel attached to these characters. They are much more flat than that of Sanderson's other work.
review 2: While the novelty of the first book somewhat wore off, this book still delivers the same fun mix of characters, magic, humor and adventure that I fell in love with before. To me, the main selling point of this series is not the creative use of talents that look like curses at first glance, but
... more rather the snarky, extremely unreliable narrator who enjoys lecturing and actively misleading the reader... when he's not busy instructing you to glue over the first paragraphs of a Jane Austen novel with the tale of a bunny who got a bazooka for his birthday. Not many books can get away with completely breaking (...heh...) the fourth wall, but this series draws a lot of its appeal from engaging the reader in several ways, and I don't think this series would be nearly as much fun without it. less
