review 1: This book was everything I wanted it to be. The fun of Miles with the lightheartedness of Peter. Inter-dimensional travel. And heart…a lot of heart. Before I review the book, I think it is important to point out something from the past. At the San Diego Comic Con in 2005, Ultimate Spider-Man writer, Brian Michael Bendis, told fans that he didn’t think there would ever be a crossover between the main Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Marvel Universe. His well-known quote is that any such crossover would be evidence that Marvel “had officially run out of ideas.” Many have used this quote against Bendis, but I feel that this book proves that his original quote was misguided. He, himself, wrote this book, and it was in no way a last resort for a company that had r... moreun out of ideas. With that being said, I recommend this book to anyone that has been following the new Ultimate Spider-Man storyline starring Miles Morales. Even if you haven’t read a story starring Miles, you can get caught up with what is happening in the same way that Peter is getting caught up throughout the story. The two heroes fighting together is nothing but fun, and seeing the 616 Peter Parker make his first appearance in the Ultimate Universe a momentous occasion in the history of Spider-Man. Timeline-wise, this story takes place before volume 4 of Ultimate Spider-Man. I’m not sure exactly when, during the Big Time era of 616 Spider-Man, this takes place, but definitely before Amazing Spider-Man #698.Now, for spoiler-filled thoughts:The story opens in the 616 Universe, as Peter is transported to the Ultimate Universe by a machine that Mysterio created. Peter slowly figures out that this isn’t his world, and of course, when he and Miles first come face-to-face, they have a fight. Miles actually wins, and knocks him out with his venom blast. Peter wakes up, incarcerated by S.H.I.E.L.D. They get things worked out, and both Spider-Men work together when Mysterio unleashes his illusions on them. After that battle comes my favorite scene in the book. Peter goes to see Ultimate Aunt May. This was a very emotional scene, as May has recently lost her Peter. She never got to say goodbye, and now, seeing this older version of her Peter, she has a chance to tell him how she feels. More than that, she knows that there are other worlds where Peter is still alive. This gives her a sense of peace that would have never been there if Peter hadn’t accidentally crossed over. I loved everything about the conversation between Peter, May, and Gwen. This conversation seemed very real, or at least as real as a conversation about parallel universes can be. Right before the final battle there is a funny interaction about Nick Fury’s race change in the Ultimate Universe. The Spider-Men and the Ultimates fight with Mysterio, and he almost gets the upper hand against them when he uses chemicals to make them hallucinate. During this altercation, Miles briefly crosses over to the 616 Universe, using Mysterio’s machine, but then comes right back. Once Mysterio is stopped, the Ultimates take him away, so I guess that he will be stuck in the wrong universe. Peter has some parting words of wisdom for Miles before he goes back:-Don’t let yourself get cloned.-Only date one girl at a time.-Don’t let Aunt May marry Doctor Octopus.-Don’t lend money to Wolverine or Mockingbird.-Once you beat up a bad guy leave the crime scene as soon as possible because they’ll try to make you clean it up.-Wash your costume daily. -Then, as he is about to give his most important bit of advice, time runs out and he is sent back to his home. The thing that Miles takes away from this whole experience is that he got Peter’s blessing. Miles now knows that the original Spider-Man is happy with Miles taking on the mantle. Back in the 616 Universe, Peter does a web search on the name Miles Morales and is shocked by what he sees. It is a mystery to the reader, and I don’t expect that mystery to be solved anytime soon.
review 2: Brian Michael Bendis - writerSara Pichelli - artistSpider-man is out swinging around New York, fighting crime and being a cool guy, when he stumbles upon Mysterio in an abandoned warehouse. Mysterio is clearly up to no good so Spider-man starts to beat him up, but before he can wrap things up our hero is knocked into some kind of portal by the nefarious villain. This portal transports Spider-man to an alternate (Ultimate) dimension where Spider-man was killed publically and his secret identity is well known. If that isn't enough of a mind-trip, our dimensions' Spider-man almost immediately runs into the young, bi-racial student who took the place of that dimensions' fallen Spider-man.Great writing, as expected, from comics master-scribe Bendis. Excellent artwork by Ms. Pichelli -- her drawings are reminiscent of the great Steve McNiven. Highly recommended for fans of Spider-man.5/5 less
