review 1: Like your mystery gritty and a little breathless? Parisian P.I. Aimee Leduc is for you. As she winds her way in out of the streets of her native city, dodging Russian mafia, viewing corpses at the morgue, extracting her colleague from jeopardy and chasing down the location of a rare Modigliani painting. The information Aimee uncovers about Russians in Paris in the post-war teens, Lenin in particular, is a nice history lesson within a mystery. The international art market is as treacherous as ever. A secondary plot involves Aimee's former partner who has moved to Silicon Valley to become chief technical officer of a start up. He quickly realizes that he is being used to set up an illegal stock trading app. Escaping back to France with his life becomes paramount. Once... more there, he needs to figure out how to disable what he has innocently set in motion. While that plot was certainly interesting, it was distracting from Aimee's case. Nevertheless, the atmosphere of Paris, the often flinty and matter-of-fact Parisians, and especially Aimee herself, are worth getting to know.
review 2: It is rare to find a compelling leading lady detective. It is rarer still to have that character brought to life by a female author. Kudos to Cara Black! This is Book 13 in her Aimee Leduc series; however, each book can stand alone. Originally I purchased because it was linked to the Montparnasse, the once thriving art district in Paris. Side note: I adore Miss Fisher! But this story is more than the past--it bridges the two with a tightly written narrative. Looking forward to all of the others. less
