review 1: This is a unique thriller, yes another one from Scandanavia as in Sweden. What makes it unique, in my view, is that one of the narrators is a three year old child who has been locked in and seemingly abandoned by her mother, while her father is absent from Sweden for work. The truth is her mother is found dead alongside her younger brother who is found in his pram seriously ill after exposure to the weather. The next problem is that identifying the mother and her baby son is extremely difficult because all their identification has been removed. Meanwhile a teenage girl has been found murdered aboard the Cindarella a cruise ship sailing between Sweden and Finland. Chief Inspector Conny Sjoberg initially focuses on the case of the murdered Jennifer, only sixteen but fabulous... morely beautiful and unfortunately naïve. Slowly but surely the investigation evolves and surprise surprise there's a connection in the two cases. The murdered mum and the murdered teenager. All this time, three year old Hanna is trying to rationalise her abandonment, scrabbling for food in the empty apartment, making random phone calls that only a three year old can make. Carin Gerhardsen has crafted a very compelling thriller with a stunning conclusion.
review 2: Reading books involving domestic abuse always makes me want to throw the book out the window because it makes me so mad my veins start popping. Besides from that I liked this book but at times I found it a bit to messy, there were too many threads that all were connected in a sometimes far-fetched way. Also the pace was a bit slow, you could say the cops were doing a bit too much brainstorming about the who and the where and the what and the why. I just felt like they could do more solving and less talking. All in all, not Gerhardsen's best but absolutely worth a read if you like this genre of books like I do. less
