review 1: A lot of little things annoyed me about this book. I don't really care for first-person-present-tense. Much of the dialogue was stilted. The whole ancient secret society/cult thing was too Dan Brown-ish (and I didn't like The Da Vinci Code). I found the endless references to Classics and philosophy precocious. The supposedly ancient texts sounded conveniently chatty when translated. But... I kept reading to see how the whole tangled story would be unraveled and to see if my guess about one of the villains was correct (it was).
review 2: Not sure why few others liked this book very much. I loved it from beginning to end. Admittedly, I had to stumble through a lot of the references to the ancient cults, religions, and people of first century, post-Vesuviu
... mores-eruption, but I appreciate all the research the author did. I love historical fiction, especially when based on or during real historical events and time periods. Maybe I'm an easy audience, but the author's writing style and story were great for me. less

I felt like it took a while to get going but once it did I really enjoyed it.
