review 1: I am usually a huge fan of Carolly Erickson's take on historical fiction, but I have to admit this one fell a bit short for me. I felt very disconnected from all of the characters I encountered in this novel, especially the main character Catherine Howard. I am not sure if this was Erickson's intention or not, but it left me wanting more out of the characters and the story as a whole. The one interesting spot was her take on Anne of Cleves, I have never seen her presented in such a conniving way before and that added an interesting layer to this otherwise flat story.

I love reading anything about the Tudors, and I liked this focus on Catherine Howard (the fifth wife of Henry V... moreIII) because I haven't read much about her before in either fiction or nonfiction. This story focuses mostly on the few years before she became queen. I would have liked to read more about her childhood and family. less
