review 1: Persuasion is now my favorite Jane Austen novel and I find Anne a most sympathetic character. The recent movie did not do the novel justice because so much of the novel is the shifting of Anne's emotions, judgements, and coming to terms with the past and the present. So I was intrigued to see what Bebris would do with the characters that we had met in Persuasion. How could she use them to formulate one of her Austen mysteries? She did very well. Though I did not suspect the murderer, the murderer is a logical choice in the end. Sir Walter and Elizabeth Elliott are still very selfish, Captain Wentworth another Darcy-type hero, and Anne is happily married (all of six or so months). And I was glad to find that Georgiana finds love at last and has developed into the Ann... moree/Elizabeth type of female character. (In other authors' continuations, she becomes either a Fanny Price or remains a kind of a cipher. Given Captain Wentworth and Admiral Croft's roles in this book, the reality of navy politics and life was highlighted and fascinating it proves to be.
review 2: The sixth (and perhaps the last?) of the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mysteries inspired by the novels of Jane Austen focuses on the characters of Persuasion, one of my favorite Austen works. We meet Captain and the now Mrs. Wentworth in Lyme where the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy and Georgiana are on holiday, along with other characters from the last of Austen's novels: Mr. Elliot, Sir William and his eldest daughter, Mrs. Clay, Lady Dalrymple, and yes, we even get a brief glance (thank goodness!) of the ever-whining Mary and her too-kind husband Charles. Ms. Bebris again captures Austen's characters with great insight and faithfulness to the original novels, yet she fabricates mysteries around these characters (plus some new faces and names) that leave us guessing to nearly the end of the book. Now that Ms. Bebris has addressed all six of Austen's novels (not including her juvenalia), I wonder if this sixth book is the last Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery. I certainly hope not. less
