review 1: After reading every book in The Mortal Instruments series I felt like I needed a bit more information about the world of shadow hunters. This book is basically a handbook on becoming a shadow hunter. Clary Fray is training to become a real shadow hunter by Jace Wayland. Even though this book is not from their perspective, they still write little notes in the codex for us to see. I really enjoyed reading this book because it helped me understand the world of demons, downworlders, runes etc. I recommend this book to anyone who is currently reading or has finished this series. Honestly, everything will make complete sense when you get your hand on this book.

... moree Nephilim. Their task is to control the demonic creatures that reside on earth. The codex covers everything from how to choose you Shadowhunters name, the types of demonic creatures, the types of weapons that they can be used and the pros and cons of each of those weapons. The illustrations are wonderful. I was amazed at how clear they were on my Nook Samsung Galaxy and the Kindle Fire HD. The side comments provided were hilarious. I can see that my middle school students who have read Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices are going to truly enjoy this book. Will be a good addition to the school library. less

I liked this in depth look into the shadow hunter world. It was also hilarious to have Jace, Clary, and Simon's commentary throughout and it lightened up the book a lot. The codex was very formal and could be extremely dry at times and for that it lost a few stars for me. I'm glad I read this book because it was a great refresher into the shadowhunter world but I wouldn't really recommend it unless you were a huge fan of the TMI or TID series and wanted more info on the world and background.
