review 1: Set in gritty, bohemian suburban Melbourne, Cath Crowley's Graffiti Moon covers most of the themes relevant to adolescents and covered in adolescent fiction. The novel is written with an urban audience in mind, using language and description to effectively and convincingly convey the setting and characters. The use of art and artists as motifs to explore elements of the story allow the reader to consider its themes quite deeply and to make some interesting connections between life and art, and the impact of art on life. The narrative takes place over one night; the characters, having just finished Year 12, celebrate with a night on the town. There is much mulling over the behaviours of older teenagers so a pre-reading of the novel would be important, but all of the complic... moreations are satisfactorily resolved without cliche. However, it does have the capacity to stretch readers and provide an array of opportunities for considering life-related driving questions through conversation and collaboration. This story is much more suitable for average Stage 5 readers, rather than those still in Stage 4.
review 2: I really liked this. The descriptions were magical, the charters were really likeable and it was original. I'm not saying it was particularly believable, I don't know many urban teenagers who can name artists, make glass art and read art books but there we go, maybe it's just an Aussie thing. Or maybe the author is just being hopeful. I can't say it was particularly gripping, the plot wasn't exactly intense but it was well thought out and the ending sort of came together well. Everything could have been a bit darker and more dramatic but I'm bias because i like dark and dramatic books and this is probably aimed at a slightly younger audience anyway. But it was worth a read, i'm glad I did, it inspired me to get drawing again because, as the book points out, art is a beautiful form of self expression. less
