review 1: This book was ok. I normally like this kind of historical storyline with a little mystery and a lot of romance. This book I did not like as much as some others because the chapters were very short and I thought plot development was lacking. There was one mysterious question to hook the reader from the beginning but the actual plot didn't develop until page 250 and then didn't move quickly. For a nice easy read that has a predictable ending I recommend this book. If, however, you like books that have strong female leads to counter the males this book will probably irritate you until the end. This is the first book I have read by this author and I don't plan to read anymore.
review 2: This was so bad it was funny. Just good enough to keep me going but certainly n
... moreot good enough to repeat. It was mindless and I've been feeling the need to balance more serious books with some fluff and so I guess you could say this fit the bill on fluff. I just wish it could have been better. I have nothing against light fiction, I enjoy it a lot. But the characters in this book seemed to change personalities randomly when it suited the plot. For example, Aunt Leah is too extreme to be real. I couldn't believe she was sincere in the end. Furthermore, the mystery wasn't a much of a mystery. Parts of it worked better than others, but I knew "who done it" 1/3 through the book. And then the modern attitudes of the characters in 1831. Yes, men kept mistresses at this time. And many high society ladies had lovers. But the amount of refined young "virgin" ladies talking extensively to men about how much they wanted to be naked next to these men and how they didn't want to wait for marriage to "do it" was just too ridiculous.Seriously, I never would have finished this book if it wasn't for the fact I had it on audiobook. less

Usually I really like Coulter's books, but this one fell a bit short. There were things people did that seemed to be out of character for this time period: 1831 England. For example, a young lady is brought into society. She and her young aunt spend ALL of their time with two men who are uncle and nephew at the uncle's estate, Ravenscar. The uncle is accused of murdering his wife three years ago and the young lady (after having known him only a couple of weeks) grabs the lapels on his jacket, shakes him and says, "you're not a murderer!" Hmm.The adventure aspect was pretty good, although I would have liked to read more about the smuggling business. This book falls into the "fluff reading" category.
