A Dirge for Prester John
review 1: This is a book club book, so just a brief impression for now. I'm sure that my misgivings with this text will be part of the later discussion. There were times when I did not enjoy this book, and other parts that were excellent. The language was good, the story, obfuscated at times, by design, I believe, and I was never quite settled with the characters. I was interested enough to want to read the other volumes in this series, but it seems that there may be publisher woes for the last volume, so volume two is out, but volume three is in limbo. It earns a a half star because the used copy we ordered (because the book is OOP) was signed by the author, which is always cool.
review 2: I really liked the Orphan Tales by the same author, but this wasn't as catc
... morehy. I suppose I enjoy fast paced books, which the Orphan Tales were. This gets bogged down, and for some reason the characters I didn't find all that enthralling. I'm not sure who this book is aimed at. Prestor John goes to some mythical land and learns a lot there that upsets his Christian/Catholic belief system. I suppose it would be an interesting discussion if I were Christian, but then again it might not since it challenges the Christian belief system by discussing the existence of a mythical land with mythical creatures. Such questions as if a sentient monster with no head existed, would it be counted as man or beast? To me this isn't an interesting question, but maybe to others? less

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it ended. MOAR PLIS.

Not an easy read by any stretch of the imagination, but so, so worth it.

A novel concept and absolutely beautiful prose.
