review 1: The events of the story are dark and tragic and tinged with magic and superstition. Will Shakespeare hears the story of events in Illyria from Violetta, Feste, and Violetta's kinswoman Maria. Much of the story is given over to those past events. The book is a little short on action as a consequence. The action sequences are fairly brief except for the final confrontation. There is lots of violence and bloodshed and no funny moments. Shakespeare fans and scholars will recognize situations, people and lines from his plays that the reader must believe influenced his works. What I really liked about the book were the descriptions of Illyria and the creation of the culture of that land. I also loved the depiction of Elizabethan England with one foot rooted in superstition. The... more author weaves in magic and superstition to create a fully believable world. I came to care about Violetta and her homeland but I wanted a bit more action in the story. I felt that it concluded too quickly. Fans of Celia Rees's other books will not be disappointed by this one.
review 2: This book reminded me of two things: a baked potato and the Beethoven's moonlight sonata. JUST GO WITH ME ON THIS. This book had so much potential, there were so many things this author could do with it...like there's dozens of things to do with a baked potato. You can deck it out with cheese and butter and sour cream and salt, etc. This book is baked potato: there were lotsa things that could be done with this book, BUT the author decided to do Absolutely nothing to this book. Like with the writing style. The author could have filled this book with lavish details... Yet all we got were brief discriptions. SECOND ANALOGY: the Moonlight sonata by Beethoven. Moonlight Sonata could be a very dull song if the pianist does not inject Feeling into the song he is playing. I felt that the author did not inject as much feeling or flavor into this book for it to interest me. The characters were just unmemorable. The storyline seemed to drag. Course some people may just like eating plain potatoes, and may like this book. I did not. On to the next book! And I think I even feel bad this time around for not finishing a book. less

This has characters from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I have enjoyed some of her other books more.

A tangled writing style that felt heavily distracted most of the time. Not my thing.
