review 1: While not horrible, it's still not good. It could have been and should have been good. However, while constantly seeming to portray a strong young woman as a central character, we are really left with a willful and not always too bright young girl led about by characters around her. Plot devices abound and are not developed, dashing highway men appear and disappear, strong lower class characters rise up and go nowhere visible, possible homosexual relationships are strongly hinted at and left to lie or die or maybe not even exist at all. Anyway, not horrible, just not great.
review 2: I thought this was a good book. Not your typical young adult book that you would expect. What I liked was the storyline, especially the end of the book was good. Sovay's journey th
... morerough the book is an interesting one. She grows as she experiences the different things she is forced to face. Another aspect that I liked about this book is the fact that she is a strong and independent character. She is determined to defend the character of both her father and her brother in the end putting herself at risk. She meets interesting characters along the way that are intrigued by Sovay and wish to help her. I would recommend picking up this book. It is a good historical book for a rainy day. less
