review 1: Celia Rees writes astonishingly good stories suitable for both adults and younger readers, with an extensive vocabulary. I love her usage of the English language and her expressive vocabulary. Set during the French revolution starting in England and moving to France it is both a work of fiction and a history lesson. Thoroughly enjoyable, although as it is from a young girl's perspective I think female readers will enjoy it more than male readers.
review 2: This book has so much potential, but left me disappointed. I think Celia Rees has a great writing style but, there were so many scenes that suggested something was going to happen, but they didn't. I wish Rees was a more daring and challenging writer, because she is a great writer. Sovay is presented as a squ
... moreeaky clean, justice seeking girl who becomes a highwayman to save her father and brother from being convicted of sedition. Yet, she enjoys the perks of living a privileged life. Also, men seem to fall at Sovay's feet, which was ok to begin with, but got very irritating toward the middle of the book. Her romance with Leon seemed unfinished, and I feel that as a reader, I didn't know Leon's character well enough to consider him a love interest for Sovay. Personally, I would've preferred if Sovay fell in love with bad boy highwayman Captain Greenwood, to add some excitement to the story. Overall, an average read. I expected more from it, and it's just left me wishing for more out of the story. less
