review 1: I binge read these when I was sick this month. I don't think binge reading is the way to go with this series. There is A LOT of exposition in these books. I know authors have to do that, but I can only take so many paragraphs that go over the same thing that happened in the past. Sometimes the author would repeat the same exposition points in the same book, which was irritating... but even more irritating were the times that she included new and important and interesting information in the form of exposition. It made me feel like I missed a book. (ex: *spoilers* "Of course. my only living cousin had been murdered recently after being turned into a vampire by the vamp queen of Louisiana, who was also her lover. She left everything to me and I have to go clean out her house ... morein New Orleans. Old news. NBD.") Also, there was a lot of "I took a shower and put on some makeup and got dressed in this outfit after deciding against this other outfit then I went and made food" type of stuff. It wasn't the worst, but sometimes it felt a little overdone. That being said, I enjoyed most of the writing and the characters. It wasn't great literature, but it was fun. Sookie Stackhouse is a refreshing narrator, and she is both relatable and interesting. The stories took twists that I didn't foresee (for the most part), and I was intrigued by the world Charlaine Harris created. She painted a very different Louisiana than what I'm used to picturing. Pretty much everyone is either gay, bisexual or has been abused. And of course there are vampires and weres and other magical creatures. So, it's different from most beach reads. I wouldn't recommend these to my younger relatives because of some explicit sexual content. The mysterious and magical parts of the story are fun though. P.S. The story rambles, just like real life. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Part of me appreciates it, but part of me thinks "you are writing a story. If you introduce a gun in act one, you should kill someone in act two." I especially feel this way about the relationships. I feel like we are promised things that don't get delivered. And things that happen don't have the proper foreshadowing.
review 2: That this is sold as a set is misleading that it is the story from the start through book 8... there are strange story gaps and references as if the reader should know things that were not in earlier novels, because apparently there are mini stories in other publications that are not here! (Though one does not know that unless one sleuths on own!)Aside from those, there are a few story inconsistencies with timelines and character backgrounds (ex: Queen of Louisiana's age; when the vampires came out, etc.)What I like about the series and what prompted me to keep reading (and want to read the remaining books) is the mysteries woven into the paranormal. Some characters are developed very well, Sookie and Eric, for instance. less

A bit heavy in the romance. But the mystery is always good!
