The Southern Vampire Mysteries (short stories and novellas)
review 1: I especially enjoyed the novella, the interview with Charlaine Harris, and the plot summaries of each book. I read the books as they were published and sometimes it took me awhile to remember who all the characters were. The correspondence between Eric and Bill was a nice touch to tie the plot summaries together. Also, I learned about some short stories in the Sookieverse that I hadn't seen, and I loved the map. As series companion volumes go, this one is decent.
review 2: I really could have taken or left this. The short story at the beginning is sort of entertaining, although it should have just been included as part of the series of novels. The interview with Alan Ball was kind of cool, but that is because I love the man's work.Recipes are whatever. I don
... more't get into stuff like that. The character stuff at the end was somewhat helpful, although I didn't think it was completely necessary to completely reiterate the skeleton of Sookie's story throughout the series. Very dry, though, and not very entertaining.Didn't care much for the author bios. At this point I'm most frustrated with the author for the handling of the short stories as part of the series. Not only are they not all included in one concise volume (as a matter of fact the most concise way to get them all involves at least four different books), they contain important parts of the story such that if the reader doesn't know about them, they can come into a book and wonder if they've missed something because it is talked about as if the reader already knows even though it wasn't in any of the books. I think this is a poor publishing strategy and it is really obnoxious to have to track down unrelated anthologies to get these last two stories. Not sure if I will do it or not. Otherwise it seemed like this book was mostly just to milk the Sookie Stackhouse series a little bit more. It isn't anything impressive, although the short story at the beginning will be important for those wanting a complete picture of everything that happens in the series. less
