review 1: I like the Bess Crawford series because the stories are more about solving a mystery than seeing how much gore I have to endure while doing it. This story seemed to be somewhat contrived. I never resolved in my mind how Bess became sympathetic with the main character, Lydia. I can really relate to Bess, but I don't think I could be that involved with Lydia. I would have figured out a way to get help for her some help another way. Of course, there would have been no story. It was almost like Charles Todd was grasping that day for a story to write. I even found the ending also contrived. It was like...oh, I have to end this story who can I find as the murderer? Still recommending!
review 2: In this third Bess Crawford novel, the setting---England during t
... morehe dark days of WW1---is described skilfully, such that the reader feels he is present in that time of war, uncertainty and hardship. The storyline is less impressive, as Sister Bess befriends a distraught woman who has quarreled with her husband. Accompanying her back to her home, Bess is swept into a world of secrets and murder from which she cannot in good conscience leave until the evil is revealed. less
