review 1: I actually liked this book, although I can't really say why. The plot was not the best, and the mystery was not airtight, but it was interesting. The language and descriptions didn't really indicate that it was set in England. It could have been anywhere, except for the massive amounts of tea that were consumed and talked about in the book. I'm on the fence about how I feel about Bess. She was annoyingly intrusive at times and much too forward. Many of her thoughts and actions were out of place for that day in age, but I look forward to reading the next one. We'll see if it improves.
review 2: Ever since a trip to WWII battlefields, I've been reading fiction about both world wars and enjoying the contrasts between life on the battlefield and at home and the con
... moretrasts of society before and after each war. Like Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs, Todd's Bess Crawford is a nurse on the battlefield. In A Duty to the Dead, Bess is home recovering from a broken arm she received when her hospital ship was sunk. Her mission to deliver a message from a dying soldier to his brother embroils her in a family secret involved murder and dishonor. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. less

Excellent. I read it in an audiobook, which made for a slower pace but all the more riveting for it.
