review 1: Bess finds herself in a mess that this time she really couldn't avoid. Her job as a nurse and her good name are at risk when a soldier in her care disappears after being acknowledged as a hero by the king. Simon and Bess set out to find the deserter and find so much more. I still think the series sometimes pulls things out of the hat rather than proper plotting but not so much that it is pure hand waving to solve the mystery.
review 2: This book moved along quite nicely for the first two-thirds and then it just stalled out. Bess and Simon meandered aimlessly in a rural village for three long, detailed and over described nights and then the book sort of ended. I love the beginning but I started to feel as if someone had forgotten to give the characters any mo
... moretivation; Bess, Simon or the bad guys. I was disappointed because I really like this series and generally feel like the characters are intriguing. That said, I hope that the next book tightens up the pacing and provides some reason why Simon would willingly follow Bess all over creation. less

A typical book in this series--not very suspenseful, but a solid mystery with likeable characters.
