review 1: PG-18. I can't give it a higher rating because of innuendo and language. However, if I was giving a rating based just on the snark - I'd probably give it somewhere between 4-5 stars. Not all vampires like other vampires - some are thieves and very good at their job. But the world chooses otherwise for our friend who finds herself with pet humans and friends and an evil government entity turned civilian to fight. It's a fun adventure.
review 2: I've been steering clear of most Urban fantasty. Too much White Cis girl falls for White Cis vampire and loses interest in her own life in order to cater to his. This book has helped make me want to reconsider though. Although Raylene is indeed white and cis, she's also smart, independent and very much a loner she's no
... moret looking for a man, just getting over a break up, or anything along those lines at all. There were some points in the book where Raylene's internal commentary went on a little too long for me and I had to fight the urge to skim paragraphs to find the point. Overall though, I loved Raylene's voice and her outlook on life and situations. The vampires in Bloodshot aren't overpowered and seem a step up from human instead of godlike, which I definitely enjoyed. The one thing that kept this from being a 5 star review was the romance element thrown in between Raylene and Ian. Ian's characters was flat and I found it hard to have sympathy for him at all. In fact of all the characters introduced his was the one I felt for the least. Having Raylene suddenly develop romantic feelings for him when they barely had any interaction aside from 3-4 conversations about the job did not sit right with me. It felt hurried and like it was a forced last minute choice. There was no chemistry at all between Raylene and Ian and the kiss they shared felt hollow and cold to me. There was much more chemistry between Raylene and Adrian. Since they decided to leave them in the realm of friendship, which is fine, I feel like they should have left romance out all together. The story didn't need it at all and it felt completely unnecessary. I'm looking forward to reading the second book and I hope they either leave out the romance or do something to make Ian's character less flat. less
