review 1: A well-written well-paced adventure story. Quick and relatively simple in plot, 'Clementine' is more of a novella than an epic. Despite its brevity, the novel is a good introduction to some interesting characters and settings, being much more concerned with a wider scope of events than its predecessor, 'Boneshaker.'One thing I find notable about Ms. Priest's books so far is her use of truly strong female characters. By "strong," I don't mean "kicking ass;" I mean strong in characterization and motivation. In most books and movies, so-called "strong" woman are often femme fatales, with sexuality and attractiveness (presumably to a male audience) being a big part (the main part?) of of the story - including (often tacked-on) romantic subplots - and their characterization... more. Romance is not included in 'Clementine,' and not once is Belle Boyd presented sexually, and while Belle's gender does play a role in the story, her sexuality does not. At most, there are a few passing references to her figure/ample bosom (otherwise, she is briefly described as not being particularly attractive), but that has next to nothing to do with the events. Not that I have anything against sex/sexuality/sexy women in books, but it's refreshing to see someone buck the trend and concentrate on building a real character rather than a fantasy figure. Kudos, Ms. Priest!
review 2: I really enjoyed this. The only complaint I have is that it felt too short. It's called a novel but I would classify it as a novella. I love the characters. I was so glad to see that Captain Croggon Beauregard Hainey, who I first met in "Boneshaker," had a book of his own. And Maria Isabella Boyd is a fantastic character, a woman who is more than a match for any thing or any man that gets in her way. Fans of Steampunk will enjoy the world of the Clockwork Century that Cherie Priest has created. less
