review 1: This is one fun ride, good for easy weekend reading. Christa Faust got Dean's character from the tv series perfectly, showing us the many sides of Dean we so enjoy from the series, the hero, the angst ridden boy and of course the big brother, all contained in one delectable package he-he that is Dean in a nutshell. Her characterization of RoboSam/SoulessSam is also spot on, giving us the comic relief in the story, just as in the season 6 of the series I find RoboSam so funny, its actually Sam without his internal filter. As an example, when he told Xochi that to pass the time and to relieve some stress they can make out and she told him that Dean made her a similar preposition he smirked and said "but I am bigger" totally hilarious. Xochi the badass female hunter they... more met along the way held her own against the Winchester boys, slightly Mary Sue but forgivable and it would have been better if the author explained why she had those powers, in the Supernatural series mythology, humans do not possess any special powers without demonic or angelic intervention. And she can be more badass I mean for someone with such abilities she is actually tame. The plot is very good delving in the Mayan myhtology, the first half having the feel of an episode in the series, while the second half gave us a roadtrip action adventure movie. The ending is actually perfect, at first you feel 'why did it happen?' but after thinking about it you will admit that given the circumstance that is the best ending they can hope for. One thing I don't like about the book is that it spend so much time delving in the sexual tension between Xochi and Dean but try as she might, surprisingly they have zero chemistry. And she tried hard to give them chemistry, it seems every few pages there is a mention of their sexual tension by various character but to no avail. I think the reason behind is that she made Xochi so much like a female version of Dean that it will feel like Dean will be dating himself if they ever got together. It would have been better if the author just gotten rid of the sexual tension angle and just made her a good friend or sister to Dean just like Charlie's character in the TV series. All in all this is a fun easy read to relax with over the weekend. BTW I'll be reviewing 'Carved in Flesh' and 'Freshmeat' in the weeks to come.
review 2: To me this seemed like a very different type of Supernatural story then you would see on TV, but that isn’t necessary a bad thing. The story was action packed. Xochi the main female character working with Sam and Dean is one kick butt chick. I loved the fact that they leave the United States,(They go to Mexico), which is something the show should have them do more. (Like when they went after Crowley’s bones.) :) I thought Christa Faust did a great job with the dialogue and thoughs of Souless Sam and Dean tortured about leaving Lisa and Ben behind. Lastly as a Cass fan I loved the very short scene with Castiel, Dean, and Sam. Very in character and in line with Season Six’s plot. less
