review 1: I really enjoyed this, with a few quibbles. It was hard for me to figure out just how realistic the white male author's portrayal of a Thai woman was. Possibly totally realistic, but my own lack of knowledge left me questioning it. Also, was the prejudice against Chinese and especially Burmese people just a realistic representation of Thai culture? While those things left me confused, there were also great lines like "I wanted to go to an English-speaking country but they were all full so they sent me to Australia." So...

... morere. Similar in style to the No.1 Ladies Detective books in that the narrator's relationships & inner musings are as important as the mystery. Lots of local color and Thai history. While not quite as exciting or fun as book 2 this was another excellent entry in a series I will definitely continue. This is one of the series that I prefer listening to rather than reading because the reader brings so much to the experience. less
