Sebastian St. Cyr
review 1: I just love this series more and more with every book... Sebastian St. Cyr is a wonderful character and his supporting cast - his wife Hero, intimidating father-in-law Jarvis, distant stepfather, and friend Gibson - all offer depth to this series. As always, Sebastian's hobby for pursuing a London murder brings him into conflict with some and draws him into the deceitful world of Regency London. In this case, the exiled French royal family are implicated in the murder of a French doctor and Sebastian realizes the murder may be related to events which occurred during the Reign of Terror nearly twenty years before. Several twists and turns make this mystery engaging and I would highly recommend it to fans of historical mystery.
review 2: This strong series seem
... mores to be at a turning point. This outing introduces some interesting new characters (and offers fresh beginnings to familiar characters), but also relies too heavily on awkward exposition (paragraphs reintroducing characters at the beginning of too many chapters) and extreme violence that doesn't do much to advance the plot. The writing is as always crisp and well-paced, the central characters are fascinating and their relationships grow in unexpected new ways and the central situation is highly engaging. Devlin's investigation is unevenly presented, but it is never boring and I am eagerly anticipating the next installment. less
