review 1: Only for the true Weber completist. This is a short, dull, novel that reads like a transcript of 20-year-old C-Span budget debates. It is all politics and fighting over naval budget requests and the history of the Kingdom of Manticore that leads up to the Honor Harrington series. This is followed by an enormous amount of technical specifications on made-up space navies and background on the history and economics of the Haven Sector. The only good thing I can say about it is that it made me want to re-read the Honor Harrington series.
review 2: Some backstory on Manticore's military buildup, R&D programs and a few minor characters paired with a detailed in-depth look at Manticore and Grayson political and military systems including specifications and commentary ... moreon all ship classes deployed by these nations during the main story lines. If you want to know more about the Honorverse, you should definitely read this; if you're looking for a more stories like in the main line of novels, you can give this one a skip. less
