review 1: Finally, a Skulduggery book that is close to amazing. Unlike the first two, this book offered mystery as well as the likable characters and dark humor that we have grown to love. The journey to work out who the villain was was excruciatingly annoying but strangely thrilling all in one, and THAT ENDING, OMFG. I seriously don't know how i can even think about waiting a year until the next book let alone do it. Overall, i'll definitely put aside the problems I had with this series in the past and stick with it until the end.
review 2: You know that device of Doofenschmirtz’s in Phineas and Ferb? The one that erases from every databank and mind whatever the wearer thinks of? The Irish sanctuary needs to look into getting one made, because as long as there are peo
... moreple worshipping the Faceless Ones, long-term peace is impossible.A religious fanatic group called the Diablerie is trying to find the pieces to open the portals between our world and the dimension that their primal monster gods, the Faceless Ones, have been trapped in. To do this, they need the Grotesquery and one of the last teleporters, a bratty English boy named Fletcher Renn.Fletcher is annoying. He flirts with Tanith, aggrandizes on his own importance, and cracks stupid jokes at inappropriate times. Just give him a chance. He’ll sneak into your heart before you even know what’s happening. While again, there are too many Ti characters in this story to really get the sit-down talks about emotions most of us probably want, their actions speak loudly enough if you pay attention.People dislike Skulduggery. His wit is annoyingly excellent and he’s so laid-back that very little touches him, and that aggravates people. So they go for cheap shots. Guild’s rant about how he doesn’t have anything to do with his life anymore now that he’s had his revenge for his family caused me physical pain. The Grand Mage went on to contrast them, saying that he has a loving wife and happy children, while Skulduggery doesn’t anymore. How can anyone, even someone as distasteful as Guild, think this is okay? It’s like President Bradley wounding Riza Hawkeye by pointing out that she has everything but her love. Unfortunately, it works on him, so people do it often. Every time, it's enough to shut him up for a few pages so he can mourn privately. Now, Kenspeckle calling Skulduggery out was a new one. Most people greet Skulduggery’s anger with fear and apprehension. Kenspeckle is contemptuous. It’s possibly the killer/healer thing that has them at odds. Maybe Kenspeckle is one of few who sees the detective as an actual, fallible person. Either way, it’s nice to know that there are people who dislike such a fun character for reasons other than the plot. While talking to the Sea Hag, Valkyrie is asked what she wants, if not the body they came looking for. Val had no answer because, as she said in PWF, she’s already doing it. She wanted adventure and power and entertainment and she’s got it all at fourteen. What could possibly be left for her? A character without a long-term goal can get scary. I’m looking forward to seeing whether I’m right in that. And Valkyrie’s already beginning to get scary. She’s following Skulduggery’s logical approach and making it coldblooded. Have I mentioned how much I adore negative development arcs?Being reminded that the name Skulduggery was born with is not Skulduggery Pleasant is painful. I’m too much of a curious person to let this go without whining about it. Valkyrie certainly isn’t curious enough to ask… about anything. If I have a single problem with her characterization, it’s that she takes everything Skulduggery says at face value and doesn’t analyze it. Which is partly why we still don’t know the names of his wife and unidentified child. If you like cliffhangers, congratulations! If not, good luck, because this is the last of the series available in the U.S. without a lot of searching. Which sucks. less

Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain (aka Stephanie Edgeley) are back, in time to take on the Diablerie and stop their plan to bring the Faceless Ones back from the void. Or, at least, that's the plan. Sort of. Because when Skulduggery Pleasant is on the case, plans aren't exactly... in the plan.I'm not afraid to admit that I get a major kick out of Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant books. I know they're supposed to be classified as "Young Adult", and I'm anything but, at this stage of my life, but they're well written, the characters are engaging, and they're funny. As long as Landy keeps writing them, I'll keep reading them.

Skulduggery Pleasant: The Faceless Ones was the best Skulduggery-book thus far. The excitement was on top throughout it all, and the feeling of doom got stronger the closer I got 'til the end and I realised that nothing would work out alright in this book. The Faceless Ones, those godlike beings, really were just as horrific as all those whispers in earlier books implied. The book ended with a humongous cliffhanger and I was very happy that I had the next book already so I could continue reading instead of agonise over the cliffhanger.
