review 1: This is not an easy read. But it is a must. It left me emotionally raw, and totally exhausted. I need to go and hug my son! It is an incredibly emotional novel about mothers and daughters, about friendship, about love and loss. It will make you cry...but it will also fill you with hope. The story is written in five people's POV, but as distracting as that sounds, it actually adds to the emotional turmoil, it fills the gaps and rounds out the book. We learn about the three best friends' past, learn how they met and learn a lot about themselves too. We also move back and forth between the past and the present, but so seemlessly that it is hardly noticable and with each page we learn more and more about the horrbilbe secrets. And the secrets just keep on coming. At times you ... moremight think that it is so horrible already that it's hard to digest as it is but bamm! There is one more huge twist that will leave you breathless and totally wild with emotion. To think that one person's one blip of a (huge) mistake can ruin three separate families lives so thoroughly is mindblowing. To see how one person's love, although it has always been hidden, can turn into one giant, terrible, shocking mistake. And the following actions will change so many lives forever. I had to put the book down at times to allow myself time to breath, to recover emotionally. Most of the time I felt as though I really didn't want to read this book, but still I couldn't stop. Now, having just finished, I'm in tears, I'm shocked, I'm exhausted and raw. By heart bleeds for them all. Such a tragic tale. But through it all, each character grows and develops and finally, because they are all beautiful kind people, somehow all through the trumoil they stick together and adjust to their new reality. It is truly worth to read. But get the tissues ready. I wouldn't say you'll enjoy it, but you will surely experience it.
review 2: I recently read Diane Chamberlains' "The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes" and loved it. It brought up a lot of discussion between a few friends who read it as will "The Midwife's Confession".This is a story of mothers & daughters, secrets, enduring friendship, love & loss. Its' a story of how we bring our children into the world, how we raise them and how we look at what we have done. It is about forgiveness and renewed love. As I read the book at times I thought I had figured out what Noelle's secret was an then another twist and there goes that idea. This is a book with a lot of twists and turns as told through the eyes of all the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. less
