review 1: This is a prequel to Necessary Lies. However, I don't believe it's written in such a way that you should actually read it first. Read Necessary Lies first and when you want another dose of the characters, read this. This short story just pissed me off about the whole book again! How dare someone make that sort of decision for someone else!!! I fully support help to make that decision if you want it, even today. We should help people that want the procedure done and can't afford it. But to take away someone's choice when they're only a kid... That's just beyond wrong!
review 2: Loved this short story. The time period and the setting captured me quickly. Very poor share croppers, and the welfare system in North Carolina in the 1960's. Between what the social work... moreers are telling their clients, and what is really happening with their clients is so shocking to believe really happened. I read this book in less than an hour. And quickly started the sequel Necessary Lies. Awesome! less
