review 1: This was a difficult book simply because the main character seemed incapable of expressing herself without being sarcastic or hostile and there seems little else to say about her except she's toxic. I suppose some might consider this strength, but while it becomes clear that she's fighting her own inner demons and the story is her journey to a better place within herself, by page 30 I was so tired of her and her constantly spewing bile in every syllable and wouldn't of minded her untimely demise. As for the rest of the book, there was nothing particularly original about it, although the author writes well enough. But I wouldn't recommend it.
review 2: A modern fantasy, with magical places and creatures in middle America. Calliope Jenkins receives a cryptic
... morevoice mail from Josh, her business partner and former boyfriend. According to police, though, Josh had been dead for hours before that message arrives. Guided by a magic-wielding clown, Calliope pursues this mystery and discovers the 'hidden things' in the heart of America even as she confronts problems from her own past. Well-written, with engaging characters and vivid magical creatures. I enjoyed the interplay between Calliope and her guide Vikous, and Calliope's reactions to the weird world that gradually appears around her. A good choice for any fantasy fans who are looking for a new author. less

A wonderful midwestern heartland fairy tale, reminded me of my favorite Neil Gaiman books.
